I've now added a "Beast Of The Month" link to the "Home" page for logged-in users. It's basically a 40x30 giant puzzle, as discussed in the Paper vs Computer topic, which you can print off and solve on paper.

Over time I'll add puzzles for previous months - you'll be able to access them via the Archives.

Oh, and this month's Beast is the same test one some of you have already done.

Ok, added a couple to the archives... both May & April have them too, so that should keep you busy for a while!

while doing the beast(s) of the month(s) I noticed this pattern alot.
I got six x's and two lines from this every time.

Yep.  Two lines and three x's from
and another three x's with your extra line.

I've been seeing it often with the extra line so that makes it different than the normal 2 lines and 3 x's

Well, I fought my way through May's beast last night.  It was going really well until I got left with a patch just below the top right corner.  Eurgh.  Logic failed me (well, it was gone midnight by then) and I had to resort to brute force.  I'm not very impressed with myself, but I simply couldn't go to sleep on an unfinished puzzle!

Junes Beast in a txt file.

Created using a semi-automated image recognizer, just cause I can... (which is currently hidesouly slow at one point in the process due to .net being stupid, .net can Draw the image in a fraction of the second, but it can't give me the 8meg of raw pixel data in under 20 grr)

The image recognizer should be useable on any image of a square grid where the dots and numbers are the same color, and the dots aren't connected by the same color, and the dots shape doesn't appear anywhere else on the image, in the same color. I'm not releasing it at the current time.
With a bit more work, it might be almost useful on scans of puzzles out of books (printed, not written) - then I might release it.

You can now get that same text file even easier... check Beast Of The Month now for a text option...

Should be dead easy to adapt the output for any format anyone requests.

One very minor change to the monthly Beasts - I've changed the font used for the numbers so it looks a little neater now. You probably won't notice much difference unless you compare it side by side with the old one.

Well, april's beast wasn't too bad - got that one in under an hour.
How often will the beast-archive get extended?

I'll be putting in "old" beasts occasionally, but I can't predict when. I've got to ensure the next few months have them ready to go, then any spares I put back into the archives. I've just added one for March!

For anyone who uses "loopy.exe", the Beasts can now be obtained in a suitable format for that, so you don't necessarily have to print them off now.

I get a "description too short for board size" when trying to use that.

*edit* it works on the May one, but not on the June one...
