PuzzleLover Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 1033 Best Total: 38m 17s | Posted - 2006.06.30 02:07:45 I only got this far with patterns and short reads. A lucky Fix Position guess (right, bottom around the 3 at r9c8) let me finish in a fair (for me) time. But can one finish up with simpler logic? Details greatly appreciated. Thanks.
By the way, I used the Lamppost Principle to pick this Fix Position attempt. If you lose your keys in the dark, you might as well look under a lamppost first, since if they're there you can see them. This guess obviously triggers other patterns in short order, so I hoped it would lead somewhere useful (and it did).

It's pretty similar to the one tilps pointed out, which I didn't spot on my way through.
After that, finding the wrong places to put lines around the 1 towards the top left (r4c3) was pretty quick, and it was all downhill from there. Yeah, that was trial and error rather than logic, but it turned out to be a very fruitful place to start looking, particularly with the semi-closed off box to the right of the 1.
The bottom right was open ended, but I chose the outward pointing loop around the 2 in the bottom right corner, which was correct and rapidly finished things off.

foilman Kwon-Tom Admin Puzzles: 3614 Best Total: 24m 6s | Posted - 2006.06.30 08:20:41 I managed to get a ridiculously slow time (for me) by trying lots of things which didn't work and not stopping long enough to actually think about what I was doing. But I liked the wrong, which changed just about everything on the puzzle! |
mathmaniac Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 1293 Best Total: 20m 57s | Posted - 2006.06.30 15:17:19 I made a lucky guess and finished the puzzle in fourteen minutes but I had to check if it was valid because I had not yet ruled out other possibilities. |
procrastinator Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 1083 Best Total: 12m 56s | Posted - 2006.07.05 05:28:12 Apart from everyday patterns, I ruled out: Line over 3 in top middle Line on left of 1 just above that Line above that 1 (Actually I looked at closing the other end of that loop) The wrong orientations of the 3 leading into the top right Joining the adjacent endpoints of the two big almost-loops
Unfortunately I missed the pattern that gives the orientation of the 3 just above the bottom left corner, so I didn't get the third step until I finally noticed my oversight after I'd searched the whole board for tricky stuff. |
