Anyone else find an early highlander which leads almost all the way to the end? (my 13minute time was because I was interrupted by work ... again - thats twice this week - serves me right for doing the puzzles just before lunch) |

I dont know about a highlander arguement, but starting at the three in the bottom left section (not in the corner), I was able to finish the puzzle. (I had this to start with)

I've heard that it's best to work as far along as one can by sheer logic before beginning to guess. But then someone with much better times than mine says something like:

Does that mean that, from the given position, you chose simply to guess as to the orientation of the 3, and your guess turned out to be correct?
Was there nothing more that such a skilled player should have deduced from that board before guessing? Or should I abandon logic and start guessing sooner if I want to get into Club 59 someday?
How did you come to choose that 3? |

It was a random (and very lucky) guess 
I am sure there is more you can put in, but thats all I had. I've kinda hit a road block in that respect...

There's the 2 on the left edge, seventh row down. I believe that's the Highlander that Tilps was referring to. You can deduce that it must have a line coming in from the bottom left corner. That leads to a lot more progress. |

yeap that was the highlander -but i got it from the incorrect trial on the 3 mentioned above - rather than direct analysis. That let me take the correct guess on the 3.

Well, maybe you can, but I can't.
After some serious studying, maybe I see it...
If the indicated position were a line, the lower 2 would be indeterminate. By assuming that the indicated position is blank, the solution follows. That must be the Highlander. Thanks! |

The line at the indicated position is a given if you put a cross outside the opposite corner of the diagonally adjacent 2, and vice-versa, the two are equivelent.
