Yeah, while many Variations patterns have Standard analogues, they're harder to notice on non-square grids, and some other patterns have no analogue at all (I recently posted my favorite example in the "Patterns in Slitherlink Variants" thread). Plus there's lots of variance in puzzle difficulty in different weeks. Anyway, best of luck with your own times, Darklady!  |

I have a sense that more so than in the Standard puzzles, the weekly record for the Variations puzzles has quite a bit of variance built in, because some of the puzzle variants are just much harder (or at least, bigger) than the other puzzle types. This is a particular problem with the bigger weekend puzzles. I would not be surprised if the main reason why I broke my record this week was mostly because a) the weekend puzzles were both "basically Standard puzzles" (no particularly exotic tilings and no 4s; can reuse (almost) all patterns from Standard), and b) because the variant I dread most, i.e. the flower shape, was briefly entirely absent ( example from last Wednesday). Such opportunities seem rather rare. Anyway, best of luck to you, too! |

Best Total: 16m 30s | Posted - 2021.10.07 22:32:13 Yeah, there is a lot of variance for sure. Some puzzles just seem to take more work. I'm not sure which ones I find hardest, probably the ones with entirely 5s/6s (hexagons, the pattern with lines of 5s/6s, the swirly pentagon pattern). |
