If I double-click too fast, it seems to skip through x and right back to blank. Am I the only one? I'm using Mozilla 1.6 and Java plug-in 1.4.2_05-b04 on Debian. |

Aren't x's just a crutch for the feeble minded? Is there any honor in a fast time if it was achieved using x's?

Well, I use both.
Who cares about a feeble mind when you have Fast Fingers?
(But the less said about the sat/sun puzzles this week, the better...) |

Oh, come on. I liked the Saturday puzzle. 
The Sunday one, however caused me trouble for other reasons. Stupid people bothering me while trying to solve puzzles. They should know better.
And I use both x's and fix position. Does anybody actually believe the weekend puzzles would be possible without both? Admittedly, there are times (like this past Saturday's) where I can manage to get through without using fix position, but it's almost always required (for me).
Oh, btw, thanks for cursing us all this weekend with this comment:

Thanks. I would be interested to know why everybody else had trouble on Saturday. It's unusual for me to get "good" times on the weekenders (as a matter of fact, I finished Saturday's puzzle and thought "hmm, 15 minutes, wonder how far off I am from the fastest time")
I'm gonna try that puzzle again later today to see if there's a spot I had to use fix position at, or if everything was pattern based. |

If you didn't, then you've got some patterns I don't have.
I can get, hmm..(checks) 20% done (mostly round the edges) before I run out of patterns which don't have more than one option.

I had horrendous problems with Saturday's for some reason... but then I tried it again and got a time of about 20 minutes, so I think my brain just wasn't working properly that early in the morning... oh well! |

There may be something going on with the tricky javascript there... because Firefox & Internet Explorer both handle double-clicks slightly differently, I played around to come up with some code that would work on both. But I've never had an opportunity to test it on other platforms, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are problems like you report. If I ever get a chance to test it on a similar setup to yours, I'll see if I can sort it out. |

Yep. But I'm feeble-minded enough to need them for the hardest problems, so I'm forced to grudgingly accept them. Or maybe I've just never persevered long enough without them.
And now I've found this site, I get the feeling I'll have to start using Fix Position too if I'm to consistently get competitive times. |

I just tried it again, and found myself stuck here but it didn't take me much farther. I think originially, I tried different positions on the 333 and 33 in the top right, and one of those failed quickly.
Odd, I really didn't remember using fix positions on this one. Oh well.

There are still a few bits that you can do quite easily from that position without having to use Fix Position... I can instantly see at least two recognisable patterns which would move things on. For example, near the top just left of centre you've got a 3 above a 2 with one cross on the opposite side. That solves the 1 above the 3! |

Turns out I just hadn't perservered long enough without them. They can be visualised as easily as lines you haven't put in, so they're really only necessary to increase your speed of solving and even then I get my best times when I remember only to put them in as sparingly as possible.
Definitely a crutch for the feeble-minded. |
