How not to get "kicked off"...? |
itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.28 01:26:29 aaaargh! Is there any way to keep from getting "kicked off" when you hit "done it"? It doesn't happen every time, but often, I find myself with a decent time (like today's puzzle <saturday's = 11 m 2 s) and then get kicked off and have to start over. Today I had to start over 3 times! Frustrating... just want to know what I can do about it (if anything)... |
foilman Kwon-Tom Admin Puzzles: 3614 Best Total: 24m 6s | Posted - 2006.01.28 14:08:46 It depends on exactly what you mean by "kicked off". I've not had any problems myself, so I'm not sure exactly what the symptoms might be. If you get a "page timed out" type error on an otherwise blank web page, then it should be possible to just hit reload/refresh & your solution will be resubmitted. I'm not sure why it happens, possibly issues with the server this is hosted on?
Anyway, I have thought of a potential solution to the problem which will require a bit of R&D time from me - it won't solve server issues but I reckon I can at least prevent you from having to redo the puzzle again.
Might not happen for a few days, as my PC is currently in pieces following a hard-disk crash. (I'm on my really old backup machine now!) Fortunately all my Kwon-Tom Loop work is backed up....! |
itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.28 17:10:32 What's been happening is that when I submit the puzzle (and sometimes it happenswhen I try to "save" too), the website will reset and take me back to the home page (where I have to login again). If I hit the "back" button, it will give me a blank puzzle to start on again - but then will go back to the main (login) page and it winds up being a futile effort. So I usually just bite the bullet and re-login and start over. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas I hadn't thought of. It doesn't seem to matter which computer I'm using (home/work/friend's house/etc.)
Sorry about the hard drive crash!! |
foilman Kwon-Tom Admin Puzzles: 3614 Best Total: 24m 6s | Posted - 2006.01.28 17:27:36 Ok, that's very weird then - not what I was expecting. I'll see if I can figure out what's going on. |

itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.30 03:53:46 I'm using Firefox... |
drnull Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 1053 Best Total: 23m 25s | Posted - 2006.01.30 12:03:57 Firefox 1.5 on Linux and I've never seen that problem. |
itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.30 16:29:21 Maybe it's just my computer then. It wouldn't be the first time something went wierd with it - the CPU decided it didn't like Microsoft during a clean-up process and trashed the base files. Can't "find" Word/Excel/IE/Powerpoint/etc. anymore and been too lazy to reinstall them. |

So which is it? |
itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.30 16:45:27 err... Definitely my home computer. Though I've had an occasional trouble with my computer at work (Internet Explorer) and at my sister's house (whatever AOL uses). Less trouble recently with the latter two. Work trouble maybe due to firewall? Dunno. Oh well. |
drnull Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 1053 Best Total: 23m 25s | Posted - 2006.01.30 16:48:56 Do you have dialup, dsl or cable, and does your ip address change often? Just wondering if maybe the site authenticates based on ip address. If so, that could cause a problem. |
itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.30 16:51:08 Home is DSL, Sister is dial-up, Work is a T-1 line (not sure what category that falls under). As far as I know, my home line has a set IP address. |
foilman Kwon-Tom Admin Puzzles: 3614 Best Total: 24m 6s | Posted - 2006.01.30 16:54:14 Yes, it does double-check the IP address hasn't changed between starting a puzzle and finishing it... but if it's static then that's obviously not the problem! Basically behind the scenes you're given a "session ID"; as long as that & your IP address stay the same, you shouldn't get logged out. Might be an issue with cookies is my guess. If you turn cookies off you get the session ID in the URL which might help... |
itchfizzix Kwon-Tom Obsessive Puzzles: 3070 Best Total: 17m 57s | Posted - 2006.01.30 16:55:25 awesome. I'll try that when I get home. thanks! |
