Email Change Process

Hello Foilman,

I changed my account email and almost locked myself out of my account, so I have a few suggestions for how one could change that process.

The current process of changing the email address looks like this.

1) The New Email field is set to hide the new email address, which is unfortunate when one can easily make typos.

Suggestion: Change to the standard non-invisible setup of two fields, one "New Email" and one "Confirm Email".

2) Currently, changing the email address automatically logs you out of the account, and you can't login until you receive the verification email. So entering an incorrect or inaccessible email directly locks you out of your account.

Suggestion: Don't auto-logout of the account. In addition, instead of directly changing the email address, use the standard method: you get a verification email to the new address where you have some time period to click a verification link which updates the associated email address. And if you don't click that link in time, the associated email address reverts to the old one. That way, one can't easily get locked out of their account.

3) In my case, I didn't find the verification email for a while, because (as it turns out) Gmail considered it to be spam. I'm not sure why that is, and I have no detailed knowledge of how the email protocol works, but it might have something to do a) with missing authentication, and b) with it being unencrypted.

4) After I thought I had locked myself out of the site, I figured I'd try to contact you, but couldn't find a way to.

Suggestion: Maybe you could add a way to contact you somewhere on the website, e.g. in the FAQ section?

---

As always, I'm very grateful that you host this site on your own time and expense. That said, since the above suggestions might be time-consuming (I don't have a sense of exactly how much), let me know if you accept donations.

PS: Before I noticed that I had in fact received the verification email to my new account, I registered a second Kwontomloop account "MondSemmel_LockedOut" or similar, so I could post a help request in the forum. I no longer need that account, so it can be deleted. To be clear, I never entered a daily puzzle with that account.

PPS: A happy new year to you and everyone else on Kwontomloop.com!

Happy New Year!

All good suggestions, many thanks for posting them; I will see what I can do when I get some time to work on the site (it mostly looks after itself as you can imagine).

Ok, I've made a few simple changes that should make the process easier - you can now see the email address as you type it, and the change is only made after the link in the sent email is clicked to verify; if the email fails for any reason (incorrectly typed etc) the account will remain as it was, and you are never logged out as part of the process.

Hi!

I have recently changed computers and wanted to login to the site, but I have forgotten my password. Unfortunately, I have also retired this year and no longer have access to the email address I used to register for the account. I am using my old computer to send this email, since I have been logged into the site for a very long time. I really would like to keep all my statistics, rather than register a new account. Is there a way to both update my email address and reset my password? Thanks for any help! I have loved this site for many years!

I've changed your password for you - it's your old email address, which hopefully only you know! You should now be able to change it to whatever you like, and then go on to change your email address. Let me know if you hit any problems.
