Here's an idea.
Typically only a fraction of the players have all 7 puzzles solved because many of them are sleeping or working or other reason.
This makes the leaderboard a bit less motivating that it could be.
The idea is that 7-day time sum could include a new puzzle at the end of the day,
instead of at the beginning of the day when the puzzle first appears.
This way everyone would have 24h window to complete the current puzzle and compete on equal footing.
One bad side is that this would reduce the motivation for some of the players to solve a puzzle "as soon as possible".
One good side is that it would greatly increase leaderboard signal-to-noise ratio and leaderboard value as a skill metric and motivator.

Some interesting ideas, thanks! The idea when I put the site together was to have a changing leaderboard throughout the day which only becomes fixed at the very end, and then appears in that final state forever in the archives (click "scores" on a day).
This does favour those who arrive early as they see themselves near the top and are long gone before they plummet down the board (people like me!) but maybe this could be optional and the leaderboard could default to the previous day's results?
I'll be keeping an eye on what others think. |

IMHO, It's fine as it is, and would be quite confusing if changed. |

I think puzzlescot is right, a change would be confusing, especially after such a long tradition of having it the way it is now.
To be positive, we need something additional, maybe a checkbox ?
(Say, next to "Results are taken from the past 7 days of puzzles.")
That checkbox would change the leaderboard from 'live' to 'end of day' perspective.
I wonder whether that idea holds water ... (and whether we can do JS on Leaderboard page)
For clarity, I'm talking only about '7 day'. I feel the daily works nicely as it is. |
